There is no chance at all to see everything.. ever! There, I’ve said it. It doesn’t matter if you plan a long distance bicycle tour or a three week holiday, you have to make choices. Since we get a lot of emails with questions about planning routes, we’ve decided to share how we plan our routes; short or long.

It’s nearly the end of the year 2015 and with a melancholic feeling we look back at an adventurous and amazing cycling year from Colombia to Canada. We left the Andes and the South American continent behind us, endured the hot and humid Central American conditions, cycled the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and reunited with Paul & Jan in Canada. This is what our year looked like.

With mixed feelings and hesitation I hit the enter button, moments later a flight back to Europe is a fact… To say farewell to this cycling life in a decent way, we have booked a flight to London to cycle the final leg back to the Netherlands. We want to end this journey in style!

There is no doubt in our mind that Peru has been the highlight of our long distance ride across the Americas. It was the country I feared most, but turned out to be the most incredible experience. Word is that November is one of the wettest months here in the Vancouver area, but together with Paul and Jan and lots of raingear we are happy to take on the challenge and decide to cycle the backroads of Vancouver Island.

Here we are, 20 kilometers away from Whistler in British Colombia, Canada and my odometer jumps from 29.999 to 30.000 kilometers! It took us a while and we (I for that matter) are certainly not the fastest cyclists, but we definitaly enjoyed every meter of it. My heart jumps up too; full of pride and then instantly a more dark feeling emerges; the end of THIS journey is getting closer and closer…

I have to admit, at first I was a bit scared. Pitching our tent in the middle of nowhere, feeling vulnerable and having visions of starring in the next ‘Criminal Minds’ episode… But we’ve camped at the most amazing places, seeing beautiful sunsets, enjoying a million stars and just us two to enjoy. What’s keeping you?

Looking back at our cycling experience in South America, Bolivia has definitely been one of the highlights . Why? The main reason is probably because it wasn’t ‘easy’. The altitude, the rough roads, the lack of hygiene all meant we had to work hard in this country. And I’ve said this many times before, but the toughest moments are the ones I remember best, make me the proudest and become the highlights of our cycling adventure.
